Longo offers a comprehensive learning series for architects and interior designers interested in science facilities in education. Below is an except from the presentation.

Sheldon Wood Laboratory Casework Construction Details

Monday, April 4th, 2011

Architects often call Longo after specifying Sheldon’s wood laboratory casework and ask for a detailed, point-by-point comparison between the cabinet they selected and those contractors wishing to substitute another cabinet.  Sheldon is the only company in the industry that provides a full top and bottom frame on all their cabinets – base, tall and wall.  From a quality standpoint (not to mention installation concerns) this almost certainly eliminates or reduce the chance of damage that might occur as the frame is strengthened significantly by the overall construction of the cabinet.

Unknown to many, cabinets are typically shipped long distances in trucks and then unloaded off the trucks to be brought into schools.  Not to mention the fact that once the cabinets enter the school that they are not moved frequently once within the school. All this handling tends to have an adverse effect on cabinetry.

Please direct all inquiries with regards to specifying laboratory cabinetry, counter top selection, and fume hood design to  the marketing department at Longo (info@longoinc.com).  To request a consultant & laboratory space evaluation, email Nat Longo (nlongo@longoinc.com).  Nat Longo has been building school science labs and commercial laboratories for over 25 years.  Project lists are available from Longo if you wish to see where we have worked in NY, NJ, PA, CT, MA & RI.

Science Lab Renovations – Still Time To Design & Order Furniture For Summer Delivery

Wednesday, March 30th, 2011

ORDER TODAY. Most school administrators do not realize that laboratory furniture has a long lead time. Meaning that after receipt of purchase order it usually is 8 weeks before furniture is delivered. And that does not take into account that lab furniture, unless selecting out of catalog, can only be ordered after approved shop drawings and/or equipment lists. Or the fact that your project may require architectural drawings and engineering plans for submission to municipal contacts for approval.

Let one of Longo’s laboratory consultants advise on the design of science space, selection of cabinets, counter tops and fume hoods and then manage the installation as your new modern laboratory classroom takes shape. Take a look at some of the school laboratory spaces by Longo:

If you are just planning a minor laboratory renovation with little plumbing & waster service improvements, the Stevens Industries Science Furniture Catalog and Labscape School Laboratory Furniture catalog offerings can assist you (see below):

Evaluating and Designing Laboratory Space – Grade Nine

Title:  Safety First: Evaluating and Designing Laboratory Space – Grade Nine

Download of lab planning info: Evaluating and Designing Laboratory Space – Grade Nine

Author & Source: Ohio Department of Education

Please see below an excerpt from this article…

Design Scenario #2: Decide which safety features should be incorporated into your laboratory space considering the needs of your lab.

a. Determine the appropriate square footage and shape of your room, the number of laboratory stations needed and the desired organization. Select appropriate laboratory furniture. (Is the laboratory space a separate room? Is the laboratory space along the perimeter or circular? What is the ideal classroom size?)

b. Produce a scale floor drawing of your laboratory design along with a description of the safety features and references to applicable safety codes and regulations.

c. Test your design by producing an outline of a full-scale lab station to evaluate the actual use of space. Outline the lab station on the floor using masking tape or chalk.

Evaluate your design using the following questions as a guide:

1) Is there enough space between lab groups?

2) Is the safety equipment located in an area that is easily accessible from all areas of the room?

3) Is there flexibility in the lab design to provide for class size increases?

4) Does the design provide flexibility for increased technology (locations away from sinks, ample outlets and computer drops)?

Asbestos Floor Tiles and Fume Hood Liners In Labs

Tuesday, July 20th, 2010

Subject:  Asbestos flooring and fume hood liners used in school laboratories built in the 1950s & 1960s.

Nat Longo narrates regarding where asbestos can be found in a school laboratory constructed prior to 1980.   Laboratory safety upgrades are central to Longo’s laboratory planning philosophy.   We design and build science laboratory spaces that are both educationally correct and adhere to strict safety codes regarding air flow regulation and removal of pollutants, chemical storage requirements, and safety within in the lab.

The Basics Of Laboratory Planning…

Tuesday, July 6th, 2010

Title:  The Basics of Laboratory Planning

Source:  Longo Educational Programs For Architects

A brief description of the presentation is below:

The laboratory is a complex environment with many variables.  It is also extremely expensive space.  When measurements are made in microns, there is no such thing as a small or insignificant detail and a poorly planned laboratory will certainly result in a functional and economic disaster.  Laboratory planning requires many years of experience and each facility has a unique set of design parameters.  There are, however, a number of general factors that must be considered and prioritized.  This program identifies some of the basic parameters that are important for an efficient laboratory plan.  It includes a photographic presentation of common problems and overlooked details.

Longo’s laboratory consultants offer free laboratory design services to interested architect/design firms.  If your firm is interested in meeting with a representative from Longo, please email info@longoinc.com with details.

Private School Science Lab Renovations For Summer 2011? START PLANNING NOW

Tuesday, July 6th, 2010

Headmasters and Presidents of private schools looking to build new science lab facilities (or renovate current lab space) during the summer of 2011 should be aware that the upfront work is required to be done NOW – why is that?  There should be plenty of time as school ends in 2010 to get our project off the ground and running.  Please see below what must be taken into account when considering laboratory renovations.

  • The age of the school building
  • The scope of the work to be performed
  • Time allowed to gather appropriate work permits
  • Town/State regulations
  • Ability to line up quality contractors
  • Lab furniture manufacturing time frames

After reviewing just a few of the factors above, you start to see a picture regarding all that must taken into account to get a laboratory construction project moving in the right direction.  So do you really want to leave the lab planning and construction up to just any firm?  Make the intelligent choice!  At Longo, our consultants work direct with private school administrators and building committees to create construction schedules that are accurate and necessary to complete the job on-time and within budget.

Architects, interior designers, and school officials looking for assistance designing their laboratory spaces, and then purchasing the  lab furniture specified for their projects should email (info@longoinc.com) for a free consultation.

Please direct all inquiries with regards to laboratory planning, furniture and construction projects to the marketing department at Longo (info@longoinc.com).  To request a consultant & laboratory space evaluation, email Anthony Stellatos (anthonys@longoinc.com).

Lab Planning for the High School Environment

Topic:  Science laboratory design options

Longo’s laboratory consultants have been frequently asked to deal with space constraints, ADA accessibility questions and lab classroom flexibility.  We have found a NSTA inspired product that has exceeded expectations of both end users and designers – The Axis Infinity Table by Sheldon Laboratory Systems.

Below you will finds to additional laboratory designs utilized by Longo (and other lab planners, architects, etc.):

A.  Typical Chemistry Lab Utilizing: TEII Lab Centers http://www.sheldonlabs.com/img/typical_lab_te_ll_tables.jpg

B.  Typical Biology Lab Utilizing Trifacial Island: http://www.sheldonlabs.com/img/typical_lab_trifacial.jpg

C.  Typical Science Lab Utilizing Pier Tables: http://www.sheldonlabs.com/img/typical_lab_piertables.jpg - please notice that this science room layout does present concerns for parents & educators (school officials looking to avoid lawsuites, negative publicity) because the students, the the critical time of performing experiments, may have their back towards the instructor.

Longo’s design services are made available to both end users (private school officials, science department chairs, school business managers, principals, etc.) and architect firms.  We look forward to speaking to you about your current labs and how they might be improved upon by layout options, products available, renovation ideas and  new construction.
