Fume
Hood Safety Recommendations
- DO NOT STORE CHEMICALS IN YOUR FUME HOOD! Utilize
proper storage options (acid, base, or flammable
cabinets) for storage of chemicals.
- Perform all
work six inched into the hood with the sash opening
at a minimal level that will
allow you to properly conduct your work. This
will help
to maintain constant air velocity requirements.
- Baffles
should be free of obstruction. If they are not,
harmful fumes may not be drawn from
the bottom of the hood up to the duct.
- Keep doors
to lab & windows in the lab
shut in order to maintain constant air flow into
the hood.
Unwanted air movements can affect the performance
of the fume hood.
- Mandatory training on the
operation of the fume hood for laboratory personnel.
Remember, a proper schedule of fume hood performance
testing should be part of any lab safety program.
A properly maintained fume hood will protect both
your lab technicians and occupants of the building. A safely operating fume hood will capture, contain,
and exhaust harmful chemical gases, vapors, and particulate
matters to the outside. Safety in a laboratory environment
is your number one concern!
